2018 South African Open Hosted by the city of Johannesburg Preview
Posted on December 03 2018
One of two events before the European Tour season continues in 2019, the 21st edition (as a European Tour event) of the South African Open brings together some of the best golfers in the world. Last year, Chris Paisley earned his first European Tour victory by three shots over Branden Grace. This year he’s back to try to make it back-to-back wins against several major championship winners, including Hall of Famer Ernie Els, Louis Oosthuizen, and Trevor Immelman. Other notables in the field include Matt Wallace, who won three times last season, and 5-time European Tour winner Darren Fichardt.
The South African Open has been played since 1903, and has been won by some of the greatest players in the world, including 13-time winner Gary Player. Randpark GC in Johannesburg will host this event for only the 2nd time in the last 20 years.
Players to Watch:
Matt Wallace: Making his 2019 season debut this week, the Englishman is coming off a tie for 5th and a tie for 2nd in his last two European Tour starts. A contender for 2018 Golfer of the Year honors, he will look to build on his incredible season with a solid performance this week.
Ross McGowan: Fresh off a T-3 at last week’s Australian PGA Championship, he comes into this week eager to make a statement after a tough performance at Q-School. A strong finish can help him secure full playing privileges this season.
