The FedEx Cup Playoffs are officially underway this week at The Northern Trust, where players will fight their way to the Tour Championship and a chance at the $10 million first prize. Last year, Dustin Johnson defeated Jordan Spieth in a sudden-death playoff, and he’ll be back to defend his title against an incredibly strong field, including former FedEx Cup Champions Brandt Snedeker, who won last week, Henrik Stenson, and two-time winner Tiger Woods, who is playing in the Playoffs for the first time since 2013. Other notables include former Northern Trust winners Patrick Reed and Jason Day, as well as Brooks Koepka, fresh off his victory in the PGA Championship.
Ridgewood Country Club will host a FedEx Cup Playoff event for the fourth time and the first since 2014. Located in a New York City suburb, it has also hosted two Senior major championships, the 1974 U.S. Amateur, and the 1935 Ryder Cup.
Players to Watch:
Justin Thomas: Hard to bet against the reigning FedEx Cup Champion, who is having another stellar year that includes three victories, one of which in a WGC Event. He is still playing great golf as he tries to become the first back-to-back FedEx Cup Champion in history.
Dustin Johnson: He’s won this event twice on two different golf courses, but with the way he drives the golf ball, he is always a threat to contend. The only thing missing on his resume is a FedEx Cup trophy; this could be the year he finally earns it.
