The highly-anticipated 2019 PGA Tour debut of Tiger Woods is set to take place this week at the Torrey Pines Golf Club in San Diego, California. Last year, it took a Monday finish and six playoff holes for Jason Day to defeat Alex Noren for his 11th career win. Day will defend his title against one of the strongest fields in a non-major, including the aforementioned Woods, who has won this tournament seven times, most recently in 2013. Other past champions in the field include two-time winner Brandt Snedeker and 2009 champion Nick Watney. Other notables playing this week include last week’s winner Adam Long, and 4-time major champion Rory McIlroy.
Torrey Pines Golf Club has hosted this event since 1968. The tournament format places players on the North and South Courses, alternating the first two rounds. After the cut is made, the final two rounds are played on the South Course. The South Course is routinely more difficult, so anyone who wants a good chance of winning this week must take advantage of the North Course before heading into the weekend.
Players to Watch
Phil Mickelson: The 48-year-old Hall of Famer showed he still has plenty in the tank last week with his runner-up finish at the Desert Classic. He hasn’t won this event since 2001, before the South course was renovated, but he can absolutely be a factor come Sunday.
Tiger Woods: His debut last year wasn’t what he had hoped, but over the course of the 2018 season, he improved and capped off his comeback year with a win at the Tour Championship. He loves this golf course, and this year should produce a much different result.
