This week’s European Tour event is tri-sanctioned by the Asian Tour and Australasian Tour at the ISPS Handa World Super Perth 6 at the Lake Karrinyup Country Club in Perth, Australia. Last year, Kiradech Aphibarnrat took the title in this unique format: After 36 holes, the field is whittled down to the top 65 and ties. After the third round, the top 24 will compete in 6-hole match play knockout matches until a winner is determined. Notable players in the field include last week’s winner David Law and runners-up Wade Ormsby and Brad Kennedy. Other notables include Australian stars Peter Lonard and Robert Allenby, along with two-time European Tour winner Tom Lewis.
Lake Karrinyup Country Club has hosted this event for its 3-year existence as a tri-sanctioned event. Designed by Alex Russell in 1928 and measuring just over 6,500 metres, the golf course features undulating terrain, a large lake, and gum trees. With a mix of short and long par-4s, it’s an ideal course for a final round knockout format.
Players to Watch:
Thomas Pieters: In order to win this tournament, it helps to have some match play experience, and Pieters has been a factor in previous Ryder Cup matches. One-half of the reigning World Cup of Golf team, if he can make it to the final 24, he should have a good opportunity to use his experience to his advantage.
Lucas Herbert. His strong finish in this event last year, a solo third, served as the catalyst for his great 2018 campaign. The native Australian will have plenty of good vibes as he tries to have an even better 2019 season.
