2019 Sentry Tournament of Champions Wrap-Up
Posted on January 07 2019
Anyone who expected the first PGA Tour event of the 2019 calendar year to be exciting was not disappointed, as Xander Schauffele stormed from behind with an 11-under 61 to win the Sentry Tournament of Champions by one stroke over Gary Woodland. Woodland began the day with a three stroke lead over Rory McIlroy and five ahead of Schauffele, and played steadily on the opening 9 holes, with no bogeys and birdies on 5 and 9. Meanwhile, Xander opened with a bogey, then started his torrid run with birdies on the 3rd, 5th, 6th, and 7th holes, then capped off his run with an eagle on 9 to shoot 31 and put himself in contention. After pars at 10 and 11, Xander made another eagle on the par-4 12th, then birdied 14, 15, 17, and 18 to shoot an impressive 30 on the par-37 back nine. Gary Woodland made birdies on 11, 15 and 17, and needed a birdie on 18 to force a playoff; however, his 12 footer on the 18th just missed, and the result is Xander Schauffele’s 4th career PGA Tour victory and the 2nd of his 2018-2019 season. He also takes the lead in the FedEx Cup standings.
Next week, the PGA Tour heads to Waialae Country Club for the Sony Open in Hawaii.
