2019 Sony Open in Hawaii Preview
Posted on January 07 2019
The 2nd straight PGA Tour event in the beautiful state of Hawaii kicks off this week at the Sony Open in Hawaii at the Wai’alae Country Club in Honolulu. Last year, Patton Kizzire outlasted James Hahn in a six-hole playoff to earn his 2nd career Tour victory. This year, he’s back to defend his title against an incredibly strong field, including past Sony Open winners Justin Thomas, Jimmy Walker, and 55-year-old Vijay Singh, who won this tournament back in 2005. Other notables playing at the Sony Open include two-time Masters champ Bubba Watson, who is playing in this event for the first time in nearly 10 years, as well as another popular Masters champion: Adam Scott.
This will be the 54th edition of the Sony Open in Hawaii, and the Wai’alae Country Club has hosted all of them. The unique feature of this par-70 golf course is each 9 ends with a par-5. The layout offers fun, dramatic finished just about every year.
Players to Watch:
Justin Thomas: The 4th ranked player in the world did more than just win here in 2017: He started with a 59, then set records for the lowest 36, 54, and 72 hole scores in Tour history. Look for him to play well here again this week.
Sam Burns: A tie for 3rd at the Sanderson Farms Championship towards the end of the 2018 year helped get his season on the right track. He’s making his 2019 calendar year debut this week, and he should be a factor come Sunday.
