PGA Tour - 2018 Wyndham Championship Preview
Posted on August 20 2018
The PGA Tour Season’s last full field event is upon us at the Wyndham Championship in Greensboro, North Carolina. The defending champion, Henrik Stenson, returns after an incredible performance in last year’s event which resulted in a one-stroke victory over Ollie Schniederjans for his 6th career PGA Tour victory. While Henrik’s spot in the top 125 of the FedEx Cup standings is secure, there are many top names in the field who are looking to play into or hold onto a spot in the Playoffs which start next week. Notables include 2017 Masters Champion Sergio Garcia, former FedEx Cup winner Bill Haas, and U.S. Ryder Cup Captain Jim Furyk.
The Wyndham Championship’s history goes back 80 years, when it was known as the Greater Greensboro Open. Sedgefield Country Club has hosted this event over 30 times overall and has been host for the 11th consecutive year. With the last two year’s winning scores of -22 and -21, respectively, players need to go low to have a shot at contending.
Players to Watch:
Joaquin Niemann: Only a win will get the 19-year-old Chilean into the Playoffs, and after the year he’s had, there’s a great chance that it could happen. With over $1 million in earnings in just 11 events this year, he’s a rising star who will be looking to shine brightly this week.
Webb Simpson: With five top-15 finishes in this event, there’s something about this tournament that Webb seems to enjoy. The reigning Players Champion can generate a boost of confidence heading into the Playoffs next week; don’t be surprised to see him hovering around the lead come Sunday.
